Burlington, MA, March 11, 2024 – In a groundbreaking move towards modernization and enhanced
training effectiveness, the U.S. Air Force, in partnership with UFA Inc., has taken the leap forward to
procure its inaugural virtual reality (VR) air traffic control simulation system at Incirlik Air Base, Turkey,
using UFA’s ATVR. This pioneering endeavor, delivered in December of 2023, marks a significant leap
forward in leveraging innovative technology to enhance operational readiness, modernize the force, and
ensure the highest standards of safety and efficiency in air traffic control.
Amidst the dynamic landscape of modern warfare and the evolving complexities of global security, the
imperative for advanced training methods has never been more pronounced. Recognizing this imperative,
the dedicated team of the 39th Operations Support Squadron has embraced the transformative potential
of virtual reality to revolutionize air traffic control training. The deployment of the VR simulation system
at Incirlik Air Base signifies a strategic commitment to provide personnel with innovative tools that
replicate real-world scenarios with unprecedented fidelity.
At the heart of this innovation lies an immersive learning experience that transcends traditional training
paradigms and the status quo. By harnessing the power of VR technology, air traffic controllers can now
immerse themselves in life-like environments, complete with realistic aircraft dynamics, weather
conditions, and operational challenges. Moreover, the VR simulation system offers a scalable and cost-effective solution to training requirements, enabling personnel to undergo recurrent training exercises
without the logistical constraints associated with live operations or complex and labor-intensive systems
of the past. With the ability to replicate diverse scenarios ranging from routine air traffic management to
high-stakes emergency situations, the system empowers controllers to hone their skills in a risk-free
virtual environment.
Furthermore, this delivery also included the first-ever delivery of an ATLIVE multi-touch control tower
simulator in the U.S. Air Forces Europe Major Command. Paired with the ATVR system, or operating
independently based on the training team’s needs, the ATLIVE system provides an immersive training
experience for the trainee to Learn, Interact, Visualize, and Experience air traffic operations in a fully
engaging 3-D environment fully controlled at the tip of their fingers or through UFA’s industry leading
voice recognition and response system, ATVoice.
“I am overly thrilled to have taken part in the very first ATVR delivery at Incirlik Air Base. At UFA, we all understand the importance of meeting our specific customers' needs through innovative technological solutions in a highly demanding and critical career field. Getting the latest products in the hands of our USAF Airmen for them to train the next generation of air traffic controllers is something we all take immense pride in providing.” said Adam Schill, Project Manager.
Looking ahead, the integration of virtual reality technologies into air traffic control training represents just
the beginning of a broader modernization requirement within the USAF. As advancements in artificial
intelligence, augmented reality, and data analytics continue to reshape the operational landscape, UFA
Inc., remains committed to staying at the forefront of technological innovation, ensuring that it provides
the tools and solutions necessary to meet our customer’s unique mission requirements.
The delivery of the USAF's first-ever virtual reality air traffic control simulation system to Incirlik Air Base
heralds a new era of training effectiveness and operational readiness for every Airman that will pass
through this assignment. Through the convergence of innovation, modernization, and strategic foresight,
the Airmen of the 39th Operations Support Squadron have laid the foundation for a more agile, adaptive,
and capable force poised to meet tomorrow’s challenges with training solutions to match.
