French Air Navigation Service Provider DSNA Completes First License Certification Using UFA, Inc. ATTower Simulator
Burlington, MA., August 14, 2020 – UFA, Inc. (UFA), a leading provider of Air Traffic Simulation and Voice Technologies, provided the ATTower tower simulator that was used in the first supervising authority approved initial licensing exam completed mainly with the aid of a simulator.
At the end of July, the first certification exam using a 360-degree ATTower simulator with a Charles de Gaulle (CDG) 3D database was accomplished. The certification process consisted of a one-hour session in the CDG tower under real condition and subsequently two hours in the UFA simulator. Two DSNA examiners validated the process. The successful DSNA candidate is now a certified air traffic controller for Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport Tower.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the decrease in airplane movements, it is difficult to certify a controller in an environment where high traffic loads usually prevail. For the first time, DSNA can train and license their controllers despite a low traffic situation without compromising the quality of exams. The simulation conditions provide a level of realism which make it possible to conduct examination in an virtual training environment. During the exam trainees can be exposed to complex scenarios that would not be possible in the real world under current conditions.
CDG Training Department Assistant Head for Simulators and Training Tools, Jérémie Bayle, was instrumental in the planning and organization of this examination. Working with Mr. Bayle, UFA provided continuous support throughout the entire COVID-19 crisis to maintain and increase their simulator capacity.
Mr. Bayle states, “This was made possible thanks to the coordinated work from the CDG Simulator Department and UFA teams. Our brand-new Ground Radar application is also part of this success because it allowed us to have access to some useful but previously missing functionalities. It made the environment realistic enough to perform this exam.”
